Climate Commitment

We clean up after ourselves.

All ecommerce deliveries have a carbon footprint, including plants. That's why we support cutting-edge companies that remove carbon from the air in days, not just planting a tree somewhere (but we do this, too!).

Velvet Leaf Plant Co. pledges a portion of proceeds from every single order to remove carbon our shipments create.

It makes zero sense for a business that sells plants to leave a carbon footprint via shipping (in our humble opinion).

Together, participating businesses have…

  • Removed thousands of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere
  • Provided carbon-neutral shipping on more than ten million orders

Velvet Leaf Plant Co. supports initiatives that actively remove carbon from the air in days, not decades. While planting trees is a great option and something we also financially support, it’s important that changes are also made that benefit our lives today.

No greenwashing here.

Here's how it works: For every order we receive, a formula is used to calculate the estimated shipping emissions. Based on those estimates, a portion of our revenue goes to carbon removal companies that have been vetted by scientists from Carbon Direct. Those companies use that money to remove however much carbon our shipments created. Any extra funds go toward the further development of carbon removal technologies. As an added bonus, all orders paid using the ShopPay system by Shopify receive additional carbon offsetting funded by Shopify on top of Velvet Leaf’s contribution.

Let's meet a few of the companies removing our shipping emissions:

Heirloom

Heirloom's direct air capture technology enhances the carbon mineralization process. Heirloom's technology speeds up the rate at which naturally occurring minerals capture CO₂ rather than using energy-intensive fans to draw air in.

Remora

Remora captures CO₂ from semi-truck tailpipes as they drive, with the CO₂ destined for long-term storage.

Charm

Charm captures CO₂ using plant waste, converts it into a stable, carbon-rich liquid, and safely stores it deep underground—out of reach of wildfires and soil erosion.

P.S. If you’ve made it this far, you probably care about the environment, too.
We currently use cling wrap and/or plastic poly bags to keep the sphagnum moss and soil in place during transit. If you have an idea on how we can reduce this plastic waste, send us an email at info@velvetleafco.com. If we execute your idea, we’ll send you a $30 gift card to use on our site as a thank you!
